The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme tests a range of kit suitable for DofE expeditions every year. The location, length and profile of these expeditions vary at Bronze, Silver and Gold level, but they all have a need for compact, nutritious and lightweight expedition meals. Firepot has been used by students on DofE expeditions up and down the country.

Recommended types of expedition food

Expedition food can be divided into ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ meals, and can be eaten either hot or cold directly from the pouch. It should be light and easy to carry, pack down small in your rucksack, and contain lots of energy. Wet food tends to be heavier but can be eaten in places which don’t have any water. Dry food needs water to rehydrate.

What kind of food should I be taking on a DofE expedition?

The Duke of Edinburgh award is about learning how to behave and survive in the outdoors. Nutrition plays a big part in understanding what kind of food will keep your energy levels up. Dried meals are a great way to give your body what it needs when you are on the move; all you need to do is add water, leave it for 15 minutes, and you can get on with completing your route.

What type of food is it?

Firepot meals are just like the meals you would eat at home. We take old family recipes and dry them to make them light and easy to carry, and we use ingredients from the local farms in our cooking. We have meals suitable for vegans, vegetarians, and those who have gluten-free diets, and can adapt our cooking to suit other dietary requirements too.
